न स यज्ञो न भविता न स राजा तथाविधः जनमेजयः पाण्डवेयो यतोऽस्माकं महाभयम्

"This sacrifice is certain. The Pāṇḍava, King Janamejaya, from whom great terror for us results, is also certain.

"यह बलिदान निश्चित है। पांडव, राजा जनमेजय, जिनसे हमारे लिए महान आतंक उत्पन्न होता है, वह भी निश्चित है।

देवताओं ने कहाः हे पितामह! हे देवों के देव! ऐसे प्यारे बच्चों को जन्म देने वाली कठोर कद्रू के अलावा कौन उन्हें इस तरह और आपके सामने भी शाप दे सकता है?

तथेति च वचस्तस्यास्त्वयाप्युक्तं पितामह एतदिच्छाम विज्ञातुं कारणं यन्न वारिता

Brahmā said: "The snakes have become numerous. They are cruel, terrible in valour and full of poison. Because of the welfare of all other creatures, I did not prevent Kadrū.

The snakes which are destined to be destroyed are poisonous ones that have a propensity to bite, those that bite for little reason, the mean and evil ones, not snakes that follow dharma.

जिन साँपों का नष्ट होना निश्चित है वे जहरीले साँप हैं जो काटने की प्रवृत्ति रखते हैं, जो बिना किसी कारण के काट लेते हैं, नीच और दुष्ट साँप हैं, वे साँप नहीं जो धर्म का पालन करते हैं।

यायावरकुले धीमान्भविष्यति महानृषिः जरत्कारुरिति ख्यातस्तेजस्वी नियतेन्द्रियः

In the line of the Yāyāvara-s, there will be born a great riṣi, intelligent, austere and self-controlled, who will be known by the name of Jaratkāru.

यायावरों के वंश में एक महान बुद्धिमान, तपस्वी और संयमी ऋषि का जन्म होगा, जो जरत्कारु के नाम से जाने जायेंगे।

तस्य पुत्रो जरत्कारोरुत्पत्स्यति महातपाः आस्तीको नाम यज्ञं स प्रतिषेत्स्यति तं तदा तत्र मोक्ष्यन्ति भुजगा ये भविष्यन्ति धार्मिकाः

That Jaratkāru will have a son named Āstīka, who will also be blessed by the power of austerities. He will bring an end to the sacrifice and snakes who are virtuous will escape."

उस जरत्कारु का आस्तिक नाम का एक पुत्र होगा, जो तपस्या की शक्ति से भी धन्य होगा। वह यज्ञ को समाप्त कर देगा और जो साँप पुण्यात्मा हैं वे बच जायेंगे।"

The gods asked: "O god! On whom will Jaratkāru, foremost among sages and gifted with great powers of asceticism, beget that great-souled and powerful son?"

देवताओं ने पूछा: "हे भगवान! ऋषियों में अग्रणी और तप की महान शक्तियों से संपन्न जरत्कारु उस महान आत्मा और शक्तिशाली पुत्र को किससे जन्म देगा?"

ब्रह्मोवाच सनामायां सनामा स कन्यायां द्विजसत्तमः अपत्यं वीर्यवान्देवा वीर्यवज्जनयिष्यति

Brahmā said: "O gods! The powerful one, the best of the Brahmānas, will beget a powerful son on a woman who will have the same name as his own."

ब्रह्मा ने कहा: "हे देवताओं! शक्तिशाली, ब्राह्मणों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ, एक महिला से एक शक्तिशाली पुत्र को जन्म देगा जिसका नाम उनके जैसा ही होगा।"

Elapatra said: "The gods agreed with the grandfather that it would happen that way. The gods went away and so did the grandfather God.

सोऽहमेवं प्रपश्यामि वासुके भगिनीं तव जरत्कारुरिति ख्यातां तां तस्मै प्रतिपादय

O Vāsuki! I see before me your sister, who bears the name of Jaratkāru. Give her as alms to the riṣi of rigid vows when he comes looking for alms,

हे वासुकि! मैं अपने सामने तुम्हारी बहन को देख रहा हूँ, जिसका नाम जरत्कारु है। जब कोई कठोर व्रतधारी ऋषि भिक्षा की तलाश में आये तो उसे उसे भिक्षा के रूप में दे देना।

भैक्षवद्भिक्षमाणाय नागानां भयशान्तये ऋषये सुव्रताय त्वमेष मोक्षः श्रुतो मया

so that this great danger to the snakes may be pacified. I have heard that this is the means of escape."
